NFL trade rumors: Giants owner noncommittal on Odell Beckham Jr.’s future

Odell Beckham Jr.’s latest controversy has led some to wonder if he’s worth keeping in New York.

Giants co-owner John Mara didn’t exactly commit to Beckham’s future with the team after a video of a man appearing to be the Giants receiver surfaced with what many have speculated could be drugs.

“I can’t answer that one way or the other. We’re certainly not shopping him,” Mara said Sunday at the NFL owners’ meetings. “Again, when you’re coming off a season when you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say that anyone is untouchable.”

Mara admitted the video, which shows a model and a man resembling Beckham in bed holding a brown blunt in his hand, didn’t help the expectations the Giants have for Beckham.

Phillies: RHP Pat Neshek said he feels better after receiving a cortisone shot on Friday. Neshek began the season on the DL because of a shoulder injury and expects to return in a month.

RHP Jake Arrieta, the 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner, makes his debut with the Phillies on Sunday after signing a $75 million, three-year deal in free agency. RHP Trevor Richards (0-1, 10.38 ERA) makes his second career start for the Marlins.

Police say they have recovered several of the stolen items, including Apple and Rolex watches and rare coins.

In addition to Almeida, police are looking for two other suspects they identified as Shayne Denn, 26, and Eric Tyrell, 28, both of whom remain at-large.

Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer, who surrendered Duda’s homer Saturday, said he didn’t have enough time to warm up before the inning. In an attempt to speed up play this season, Major League Baseball has cut the time between innings from 2 minutes, 25 seconds to 2:05.

Bauer criticized Commissioner Rob Manfred’s decision, but Francona said the pitchers need to adjust.

“If a pitcher wants to throw more, they’ve got to get out there,” Francona said. “The umpire’s responsibility is to start this game at a certain point and we kind of explained that to our guys.”cardinals_047

Patriots have had no trade talks involving Rob Gronkowski , report says

Rob Gronkowski will likely be staying put in New England.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the Patriots have had no trade talks involving the veteran tight end this offseason and expect to have him on the roster for 2018.

Meanwhile, the team is trading wide reciever Brandin Cooks and a fourth-round pick to the Rams for the 23rd overall pick in the first round of this month’s NFL Draft. The Rams had been linked to Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr. but instead opted for Cooks, who was due a $8.5 million club option before the season.

Davis has been giving New Orleans all it could possibly ask for this month, as he has attempted not only 10-plus free throws in all four games, but also recorded multiple blocks and multiple steals in each of those contests.

I’m high on players from motivated teams, and Towns qualifies, but for several reasons, he won’t be on my rosters tonight. First, he’s averaged just 37 fantasy points against the slow-paced Memphis Grizzlies this season, and second, he’s not that much cheaper than Jokic, who has been outproducing Towns substantially down the stretch and is just as motivated. Moreover, Jimmy Butler is back, and while that’s great for him and the team overall, it has the potential to cut into Towns’ usage.

Finally — I’ve been yelling at [previous managers] Matt Williams and Dusty Baker, ‘Let me go,’ said Scherzer, who said it was his first steal since high school. There’s obviously situations where I can; I think I’m fast enough.

If J-Dub [former teammate Jayson Werth] can steal a base, so can I.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez, who presented Scherzer with the second-base bag as a memento after the game, said this was going to happen.

We’ve talked about it for a week now, and he’s gung-ho, Martinez said. He loves to play the game. We talked and I said, ‘If a guy plays behind you and you think you’ve got a chance.’ But I said please don’t get hurt sliding. He said, ‘I’ve got the best pop-up slide in baseball.’ And he showed it.

Even though his teammates at the top of the order couldn’t bring him home for another run, Scherzer’s arm made it a moot point. The three-time Cy Young Award winner tossed a two-hitter for his fifth career shutout, and his first since his no-hitter in the final game of the 2015 season.cardinals_091

Jed York says he and Richard Sherman unblocked each other on Twitter

Suh or the speculation on Odell first, he said, which one is it

For the next hour, with his voice beginning to scratch near the midpoint, McVay seamlessly handled queries about the Rams’ most recent acquisition — star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh — and the pursuit of New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

As he did Monday night after news broke of the Rams’ interest in Beckham, McVay prefaced answers to questions about him by saying he could not talk about other teams’ players because of tampering rules. He then reiterated that the Rams have demonstrated this offseason that they are not shy about pursuing any trade.

Translation: The Rams would love to add Beckham to a team that led the NFL in scoring last season.

Many coaches and NFL executives disdain and refuse to answer questions posed as hypotheticals. But McVay politely and enthusiastically embraced an onslaught.

How would a player such as Beckham hypothetically fit into the Rams offense

Trying to get myself right mentally, for my family. Show these people I deserve a second chance – to do this [sport] that I love. New Gators coach Dan Mullen said Elam was still a part of the Gators family, but there are no guarantees he’ll find an NFL family. He’s 26. There are plenty of younger safeties, including in the same building where he stood. Elam offered no rationalizations, and cast no blame. He said he got complacent. He said he made childish mistakes. He didn’t even use the injuries as an excuse, saying the time off helped me get right mentally. There are two questions here: 1) Is Elam right mentally 2) Was he good enough to begin with He did have a rash of injuries, but it’s impossible to tell if he would have done better if healthy. Was it a bad fit in Baltimore

Or was it something no team could fix On Wednesday he spoke not as a big shot but as a fringe player – a guy who was just trying to get a look, or maybe a camp invite. He said he’d do whbroncos_019-500x500atever is asked, whatever is needed. I’m still young, he said. I can move. I can do special teams. I can be a great teammate. I can lead guys. I can do a lot of stuff. He said it was time to grow up and be a man. He had the look of someone who had confronted his football mortality. He knew no one owed him a thing. He was asked bluntly why anyone should trust him with another shot. People make mistakes, he said.

From 2012 to’16, Brees’ average pass traveled 7.8 yards in the air and resulted in 5.1 yards after the catch.

To be fair to Dipoto, the Mariners made a strong campaign to sign Shoehi Ohtani, who would have made an enormous impact on their rotation. Yet Dipoto now says that he doesn’t anticipate that he’ll sign another starting pitcher. There are still four good starters out on the market. Obviously someone like Yu Darvish would be an enormous boost, but even Lance Lynn could provide plenty of quality innings.

The Saints’ second-half leads and excellent defense allowed them to run the ball more frequently last season, taking some of the workload off Brees, who averaged fewer attempts per game than he has since 2005.

His rate statistics remained strong, including an NFL-record completion percentage of 72.0, but they masked some on-field slippage.

In 2017, Brees threw much shorter passes, averaging 6.4 yards in the air, with those throws generating 6.2 yards after the catch.

Drew Brees, 39, will remain in New Orleans for at least two more seasons.? AP Photo/Bill Feig Going back through 2005, the only starting quarterback to average more yards after the catch than air yards in a single season is Alex Smith, who did it in 2014 and 2015.

The most head-scratching move of 2018 NFL free agency involves a quarterback who Ravens safety Eric Weddle on Twitter proclaimed “has been paid more for nothing than anyone in (the) history of (the) NFL.”

It’s one thing for a media member to level such scathing criticism. It’s far more damning when a player gets publicly eviscerated by one of his own, especially a peer as accomplished and well-regarded as Weddle.

Yet the Cardinals not only are reportedly set to sign Bradford to a one-year, $20 million contract that includes $15 million guaranteed when it appears no other team had anywhere near as much interest. Arizona reportedly is doubling-down on the QB stiffs with the intention to also add Mike Glennon on a one-year deal.

Darvish also boasted a 27 percent strikeout rate and 7.6 percent walk rate last season, and the latter is especially appealing for a Cubs team that had the seventh-highest walk rate in the league in 2017. Even for all that he offers as an effective swingman, Montgomery simply cannot compete with that. His walk rate was a full three percentage points higher than Darvish’s last year.ravens_169

In addition to Hyder, the Lions also re-signed long snapper Don Muhlbach .

Ian Rapoport reported earlier Saturday Sherman has an affinity for the West Coast, which makes plenty of sense and helps explain such a swift signing. The Southern California native is a Stanford graduate and is familiar with Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who was Seattle’s defensive quality control coach from 2011-2013, Sherman’s first three seasons in the NFL. He’ll stay in the NFC West while also avoiding having to learn a new scheme.

“It’s kind of like college again. You got an athlete coming to your school and you want to try your best to get them there. And that’s the same thing with us. We would really like to have Kirk. I think him and his personality and the things that he brings to the table fits in with Denver. But there are a lot of great teams out there with large pocket books. So we’ll have to just wait and see. But I’ll have to give him the ultimate spiel on why Denver is special to me.”

The Broncos join the Vikings, Cardinals and Jets as teams who are making a run at signing the veteran quarterback, but Miller is ready to give his pitch adding that other markets don’t have someone like him that will be there for Cousins for the rest of his career.

“That’s one thing that these other markets are just not going to have. They’re not going to have a guy like me on the other side that’s going to be with him for the duration of his career, so hopefully that will be enough. I know it won’t, but I’m here all in for the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes.”

Miller is up against some tough competition as Cardinals stars Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson have already lobbied for the veteran to go to Arizona earlier this week.

With 12-sack monster Ezekiel Ansahreturning on the franchise tag, the Lions ‘ pass rush under new coach Matt Patricia could cause plenty of problems for NFC North rivals in 2018.

Small-market teams have been making the playoffs more often lately, especially with the added wild-card spot in each league. But getting in year after year has proven more difficult. Minnesota has the 20th highest payroll in baseball, according to Sportrac, but with many offseason moves still yet to be made, the Twins will probably end up in the bottom 10.seahawks_094_c074a3d65b735726-180x180

How the NFL franchise tag works

The heart of NFL free agency starts March 12, when teams can begin meeting and negotiating with representatives of free agents. But it really began, in earnest, Tuesday, when the window opened for teams to use franchise or transitional tags.

Top 2018 NFL free agents like Le’Veon Bell could be candidates for their teams’ respective franchise tags. Bell, however, was franchise-tagged in 2017, and he recently said he won’t play if the same thing happens to him in 2018.

The franchise tag allows teams to lock up a top free agent for one season. Some free agents want to cash in with massive, long-term contracts filled, including guaranteed money. If teams aren’t ready to commit to that type of deal, the tag gives them more time to work out a long-term extension, or evaluate a given player’s value for another season.

The franchise tag gives players basically no leverage, unless a player decides to not sign it and sit out the next season. Von Miller threatened to do that in 2016 before signing a six-year, $114.5 million contract with the Broncos.

Players who are tagged run the risk getting injured or playing poorly on their one-year deals, which would negatively affect their value on the free-agent market. Most players don’t like the franchise tag.

That his second career choice now involves punching out crime isn’t out of character for the son of an Army sergeant who graduated from Louisiana-Lafayette with a degree in criminal justice and spent some of his NFL offseasons working with law enforcement personnel.

Investigators believe Jackson and 54-year-old ride-share driver Jeffrey Monroe pulled to the side of Interstate 70 due to Jackson becoming ill. Both Jackson and Monroe were outside the vehicle when a pickup truck swerved into the emergency shoulder striking and killing both men.

It is believed to be a case of drunk driving, according to Sgt. John Perrine. Via the Indianapolis Star:

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as 37-year-old Alex Cabrera Gonsales of Indianapolis, tried to flee the scene on foot.

He was apprehended shortly after on the ramp to Holt Road by Mays, police said.

”It is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and was driving without a license,” Perrine said in a statement. ”He was transported to the Marion County Jail, the result of the test for intoxication is pending.”jays_322_c2f803b9c1613618-180x180

Portland is 16-15 on the road. The Suns are 9-21 at home.

Since beating Dallas on Jan. 31, the Suns are 0-for-February and have been outscored by 181 points in eight defeats. They have lost by 32, 48, and 26 points in that run, and their 48-point loss to San Antonio on Feb. 7 tied a franchise-worst set against Portland on opening night.

“Inexcusable,” interim coach Jay Triano said of the listless start against the Clippers.

“We knew that they’re an ‘iso’ team and they were going to put it down and drive it right at us. They did and we couldn’t keep anyone in front of us.

The Kings were unable to get rolling, and Lehtonen thwarted their late attempts to tie it.

“In the second period, we took the game over,” Lehtonen said. “We were the team that seemed to have more legs and more will at the end there.”

Quick made several outstanding stops and finished with 26 saves. But with Dallas controlling the puck after the first period, Los Angeles could never find any offensive rhythm.

With New York (24-36) out of playoff contention and Kristaps Porzingis sidelined following ACL surgery, the club will use its final 23 games to evaluate younger players.

Hornacek said this week that younger players such as Mudiay, first-round pick Frank Ntilikina and Trey Burke will play more often over the remainder of the season.

Burke led the Knicks with 26 points on 12-for-22 shooting against the Magic. He also handed out six assists in 30 minutes off of the bench as New York snapped an eight-game losing streak. Ntilikina played 30 minutes and helped the Knicks slow Orlando down on defense in the second half.

Mudiay, who was acquired via trade earlier this month, said Wednesday that he’d value the chance to start after falling out of the Denver Nuggets’ starting lineup this season.

“There’s risk in playing, risk in not playing in terms of tradeability,” Blashill said of Green. “But there might be teams that want to see him, too.”bears_103-223x223

Manager Mike Scioscia declined to put a number on how many games he envisions Pujols playing at first.

Patriots DT Alan Branch said I didn’t know anything, honestly, when asked Tuesday on WEEI’s Dale and Holley Show with Rich Keefe if he knew prior to the game that Butler wouldn’t play. On our team, gossip doesn’t travel, let’s just say that.

I noticed he wasn’t in the game, Branch said, but then again, you never know the reason for what’s going on at a certain time in that organization, especially.

Butler’s replacement in the starting lineup, Eric Rowe, had said after the Super Bowl that he didn’t know he would be starting until close to kickoff. But Rowe also said at the time that it wasn’t a surprise to him that he played 72 of 75 defensive snaps in the Super Bowl.

As for Butler’s lack of action, Rowe said at the Super Bowl that he was surprised Butler didn’t play in the game. That wasn’t the plan, he said.

The Spartans have dominated their archrival for a decade. They have won a pair of Big Ten titles, recently finishing in the top 10 for three straight years. They have handed Urban Meyer 50 percent of his conference losses at Ohio State. Their fans are top 20 in attendance and revenue.

And yet they have not won the program’s first title since 1966. With more returning production than any other FBS team, is 2018 the year?

The slugger said he focused on flexibility and agility more than on lifting substantial amounts of weight.

There’s no doubt he can play first base enough to give us some versatility in some lineups, Scioscia said. I know he loves to play first base. We’re a better team when he plays first base. He’s a terrific first baseman.

Pujols, a 10-time All-Star, sounded a bit irritated when his 2017 season was brought up. He hit 23 homers and had 101 RBIs, but his average was .241 and his OPS was a career-worst .672.

That was last year. That’s the number you guys focus on [batting average], and you don’t care about anything else, Pujols said. This is a new year for me. I don’t even remember what happened last year.bears_047
